When you think of a mango, you likely picture the classic yellow or green fruits found in your local supermarket. But in the Miyazaki Prefecture of Japan, there is a variety so rare, so perfectly cultivated, and so vibrant that it is known as the Taiyo no Tamago, also known as the "Egg of the Sun."
At Lemart UK, we are passionate about the world’s most extraordinary produce. Today, we’re diving into the story of the Miyazaki mango: the world’s most expensive mangoes.
Miyazaki mangoes are famous for their soft, aqueous, tender, and non-fibrous flesh with a succulent, melting consistency. The reason these mangoes can fetch thousands of pounds at auction isn't just their variety, it’s a meticulous process behind every single fruit.
Individual Cradling: Each mango is suspended by a string in a temperature-controlled greenhouse to ensure it gets maximum sunlight from every angle.
Solar Reflectors: Farmers often place mirrors underneath the fruits to reflect sunlight onto the "bottom" of the mango, ensuring a uniform, deep red colour.
The Safety Net: Miyazaki mangoes are never picked by hand. Instead, each fruit is encased in a small net. Farmers wait for the mango to become so ripe that it naturally falls from the branch. The net catches the fruit, preventing any bruising and ensuring it is harvested at the absolute peak of its sugar content.
The best of the best: "Taiyo no Tamago"
Not every mango grown in Miyazaki earns the prestigious "Egg of the Sun" label. To be certified, a mango must meet a set of uncompromising standards:
Weight: At least 350 grams.
Sugar Content: A minimum of 15% Brix.
Less than 15% of the total harvest makes the cut, making them one of the luxury fruits in the world. These mangoes are often given as high-status gifts for weddings, business deals, or special milestones In Japan.
Now you can experience this seasonal treasure in the UK through LeMart. With a sweet and tropical flavour, best suited for fresh preparations. Miyazaki mangoes are primarily consumed straight out of hand and are appreciated for their melted texture.
