Japanese Red Jewels 🍒: Sato Nishiki & Benishuho Cherries

Japanese Red Jewels 🍒: Sato Nishiki & Benishuho Cherries

You might be familiar with the deep-hued, firm cherries from the everyday market. But in the Yamagata Prefecture of Japan, there exist cherries so rare, so perfectly cultivated, and so brilliantly vibrant that they are renowned across the country as the "Red Jewels", often reserved as high-end gifts for significant ceremonies and special occasions.

Today, we're introducing the Sato Nishiki and Benishuho cherries, which are renowned for their delicate, jewel-like ruby appearance, softer texture, and a high-end "gift culture" status.

The Tale of Two Cherries

Sato Nishiki (佐藤錦): Often crowned the "King of Cherries," this variety was developed over a century ago. It boasts a bright, glossy red skin and an incredibly tender flesh that practically melts in your mouth, offering a perfect harmony of high sugar content and a refreshing, subtle hint of acidity.

Benishuho (紅秀峰): A modern variety which is larger and deeper red than its Sato Nishiki. Known for its large size and sweet taste. The flesh is slightly chewy, making it very satisfying to eat.

Distinctions in Size

The most immediate difference between the Sato Nishiki and Benishuho is their physical scale. While Sato Nishiki cherries are typically medium to large, generally peaking at a 2L size. Benishuho cherries are significantly larger, often reaching 2L to 3L. This difference in size adds to their visual impact; the substantial, glossy appearance of Benishuho not only stimulates the appetite but also makes them a highly impressive choice for gifting. Additionally, the larger Benishuho boasts thicker flesh, resulting in a deeper, juicier, and more flavourful eating experience.

Differences in Taste and Texture: Sweetness and Firmness

When comparing Sato nishiki and Benishuho, taste and texture are key distinctions. Benishuho typically feature a milder acidity and a more pronounced sweetness than the Sato nishiki, making them perfect for those who crave a richly sweet flavour. Another appealing trait of the Benishuho is its firm flesh, which provides a crisp and refreshing bite.

In contrast, Sato nishiki cherries are renowned for their exquisite balance of sweetness and tartness, delivering a wonderfully delicate flavour. Their tender flesh is notably soft, practically melting in your mouth.

We warmly invite you to taste and experience the unique characteristics of both of these exceptional cherry varieties.
